Toasted Ravioli, Baseball & Barbecue

No, I did not make the toasted ravioli you see in the picture–the chef at Charlie Gitto’s is responsible for that. I’ll come back to the ravioli and other awesome dishes in two shakes of a lamb’s tail..okay, I was lying, maybe 10 shakes. Oh, by the way, I was in St. Louis this past week and I had a good time πŸ™‚

We walked around downtown and took the opportunity to visit the Arch but did not go to the top. I have a fear of heights and I do best at ground level. Online guy didn’t wish to go up so we took pictures and moved on.

If you are ever in St. Louis try and visit Union Station as it is so beautiful inside. The old train station which is now part hotel and part mall.Β You can read all about the St. Louis station here.

Mall with shops and restaurants

Simply walk into the hotel and you will be amazed. I’ll show you why.

Hotel entrance
Told ya! The pictures do not do it justice.
The bar where I could spend countless hours enjoying the eye catching interior while sipping an old fashioned..if we had more time πŸ™‚
Oooh and there is a Whispering Arch–very cool!

The absolute best part of the trip for me was the zoo πŸ™‚ Oh yes, I went twice! The zoo is so awesome that it has a train you can ride πŸ™‚ I was a kid all over again.

Choo choo!

I’m such a kid that I even went to the children’s center to pet the goats. I mean, wouldn’t you?

I had never seen a goat do that!
Even caught a head butting show πŸ™‚

I touched a baby hammerhead shark and stingrays–something I would not have done had I been on my own. I was with an awesome friend, having an awesome time and was encouraged to stick my hand in the water. Stingrays feel soft and smooth, especially the baby ones πŸ™‚

The hammerhead sharks and stingrays get along so they swim together. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture of the shark 😦
Hippo watching is fun, especially when they walk/run around the aquarium. This one posed for me πŸ™‚ I think I’ll call him Bubba. If it’s a lady hippo then Beatrice would be fitting.

St. Louis zoo will definitely not disappoint. Make sure you go to the butterfly garden and the penguins and puffins area!

You can see Golden Shrimp flowers in the background. More on those a few pics down.
This was the outdoor penguin area. Look at this little guy, em, or girl–okay, here we go, Sammy if it’s a boy and Eleanor if it’s a girl.
This is the indoor penguin area-the second time around I knew what was coming and wore a jacket. Freezing!

Puffins are smaller, can fly, and belong to a different family. Alas, all the puffin pics I have are fuzzy 😦

Next stop was the Missouri Botanical gardens and I think we got through most of it–Japanese, Chinese, German, Ottoman, Victorian, English Woodland gardens..and my favorite, the Climatron, which is a greenhouse enclosed in a dome.

The Climatron is great!
Here I am in the Climatron inside a tree–I am in pain as I have just hit my head on the way in and my incredibly sweet husband snapped a picture of me at the opportune moment.
And here I am all smiles–because I can recover quickly.

Ottoman Garden-gorgeous!
Yep, that’s me sitting on my throne in the Ottoman garden.
Check out the view above moi.
So the Golden Shrimp flower..very interesting and a nice deep yellow.
I took a fancy to this Red-hot poker flower πŸ™‚
Not sure what this one was called but I deemed it worthy to be on my blog.

Finally we have the FOOD!!!

Italian restaurants on the Hill. At Charlie Gitto’s we had amazing Italian Sangria!
My French onion soup was the best I have ever had so far and the lobster bisque [sadly not pictured here] is out of this world, creamy, and luscious!
Husband had the Swordfish atop homemade pasta and yummy sauce-wow!
I had the Shrimp Scampi–equally delicious with homemade tomato pasta and an incredible sauce.

DESSERT! We ordered three, yes three! and it was my idea. The owner or manager even came over to our table and exclaimed “Three desserts!”. I did not bow my head in shame but simply smiled and continued to eat πŸ™‚

I know restaurants offer smaller versions of some of their desserts but I wish they would offer a two or four bite (or however many people are at the table) sample of allΒ of their desserts so you wouldn’t walk away upset that you hadn’t tried the amazing mousse. Don’t ya think? If you know of such a place, speak now!

We had to try the crunchy Cannoli of course πŸ™‚
The tiramisu was creamy and wonderful..I had the leftover for breakfast the next day *sigh*
Vanilla bean Gelato.. shut the front door! Always wanted to say that.

Exit great Italian food and enter finger licking downright tasty barbecue at *drum roll*…

Doors open at 11:00 and people are already lined up!
Juicy ribs on top of thick bread, green beans and sweet potatoes with sugar on them because that’s how they do at Pappy’s.
Burnt ends, pulled pork on top of thick bread, green beans, and fried corn on the cob.

Burnt ends you ask? I shall explain–see the kinda blackish meat at the back there? So what they do is take the ends of the brisket and re-smoke them and serve them as burnt ends. They are very good. I regret that I did not take a better picture of it but I was drooling over the plate at that point and you gotta eat it while its hot πŸ™‚

Gooey butter cake–mainly made from two main ingredients I want to hug right now-sugar and butter πŸ™‚

Oh, almost forgot–we took in a baseball game–Cardinals versus Cubs. It did not end well for the Cardinals but the Busch stadium was pretty nice.

A picture of the Arch from the stadium. Every time I see the Arch, it reminds me of the Defiance TV series πŸ™‚
Here is a better shot. You need to watch Defiance!
Featuring Smelly Sam and his band 'The Gullible Gills'.
Featuring Smelly Sam and his band ‘The Gullible Gills’. Toodles until my next tripΒ πŸ™‚ Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend in honor of the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

I didn’t see a picture of the toasted ravioli. Sounds like you had a great trip.
